Story
James Hood, Ed Masters, Andrew Hipper, Julian Wells and Ian
Williams have arranged their next big walk. This year celebrates their sixth
year of walking and is happening on the weekend of the 4/5th June.
This year will see many of the fellow walkers break through the 400 mile
barrier over the 11 full days that they have completed over the past 5 years; walking
along the many beautiful Norfolk and Suffolk walkways, such as the Weaver’s
way, Marriott’s Way and the Boudicca’s way. The walk again will be in aid of
the Norfolk Diabetes Trust,
which is the principal trust for helping the ever increasing numbers of those
with diabetes in the Norfolk County. In previous years the walkers have helped
to raise nearly £20,000 for projects such as continuous glucose monitoring systems
(CGMS) and Micro-insulin pens for the very young. This year we are looking to
help the continuing project of providing some 8000 hand held records and 30
podcasts that will be available to all those in Norfolk. So far this project
has been a huge success and we are hoping at the Trust to circulate this to a
far wider audience. The Trust’s most recent projects have included a huge funding
commitment of £200,000 to purchase the new IT system called Diabeta 3 which has
been installed in the Elsie Bertram Diabetes Centre. This system holds
all the relevant information for patients attending the Centre and can be
accessed at a glance by the clinician when a patient attends their clinic
appointment.
The walk entails a 62 mile journey over the stunning countryside
on the east side of Norfolk close to the River Yare. From Reedham the 17 strong
party will head towards Great Yarmouth along the………way and then head South
through Somerleyton, Fritton and Oulton Broad. After the gruelling 33 mile
first day the group will head off from the Waveney River centre towards Thurlton
and then Loddon for lunch via the Wherrymans way. From Loddon the Wherrymans
way heads towards Claxton, Rockland St Mary and Surlingham, where the finishing
point will be at the ‘Water’s Edge’. Maybe a dip in the water and a well earned
pint…. Mr Masters states’ one of the most enjoyable aspects is welcoming those that want to come along for just a few miles- we have accommodated all in the past from the ages of 7 up to 95!’. If anybody would like to join in the walk this year at any point please
do not hesitate to contact the Trust at ndt@nnuh.nhs.uk or Ed on 07973293168
