Story
In Scotland 40% of children leave primary school unable to swim and this is higher for one in five children in Edinburgh who live in poverty. Every day there families struggle to make ends meet, often having to cut back on the essentials- so swimming lessons are not affordable.
Children who do not get the opportunity to swim miss out on essential life skills and are less likely to be physically active throughoutlife, which impacts on their long term health and wellbeing. It also puts them at a greater risk of drowning, which is the third highest cause of death of for children in the UK.
Edinburgh Leisure's Jump In project provides up to 10 weeks free pre-school swimming lessons for nursery school pupils in areas of deprivation, followed by up to 20 weeks of discounted lessons. It enables them to get active with their family and keeps them safe around water by improving their water confidence and swimming ability.
