Story

Hello there. Welcome to my story. 5 years ago, I was told that my beautiful new born baby boy had Diaplegia Spasticity Cerebral Palsy (C.P); the biggest shock of mine and my husband's life. C.P is a motor condition that affects physical movement, muscle tone, reflexes, motor development and co-ordination. Sean has problems with his mobility and requires physiotherapy upto 3 times a day and he is prescribed lots of anti-spasmodic medication and analgesics. He has worn Piedro boots and has required raised insoles, since he began walking. He is clumsy and walks with an aqward gait, but nothing has overcome him yet ! He has just turned 5 and knows that he has cerebral palsy - we don't hide his condition from him, we embrace it and Sean accepts his physiotherapy without moaning or groaning, even though it is painful and the stretches hurt him. Sean is the most adoreable little boy and being born with cerebral palsy is something he has to live with daily, regularly asking me why he has it and his littlle sister has'nt got it. That's a tough one to answer. This is why I feel passionate about this type of infant and child brain injury and this is why I am doing a personal challenge, of swimming 5 k (a kilometre for every year of my son's life). It will also be exactly a year to the day, since I underwent major emergency spinal surgery and the reason why swimming became a huge part of my life and my recovery programme, so I want to put my year rehabilitating in the pool to good use. My son also enjoys the sensation of water, as this is the only time he is pain free and fully able to move without feeling spasticity in his legs. He has undergone hours of hydrotherapy to support his mobility, so Sean hopes to swim my last length of my Swimming challenge with me. If you feel you can help in any way, no matter how small, it WILL make a huge difference to the charity Cerebra. If you would like to join me on the day of my swimathon, the event is taking place at the Village Hotel, Dog Kennel Lane, Solihull from 11am onwards. In advance, I want to thank you for your kindness. Warm Wishes, Eileen, Sean, our family and everyone at Cerebra xxxx
