Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My sister Sally and I are running for BASIC (Brain and Spinal Injury Centre) as they are a charity which can be a lifeline for those living with a spinal or brain injury, in helping them live a life as independent as possible. Website: http://www.basiccharity.org.uk/about-us/
This charity is personal to us both as our sister Lauren broke her back in May 2011 and then my husband Dion suffered a brain hemorrhage in November 2012 when I was 12 weeks pregnant with our beautiful and funny girl Carmen (she is nearly 3 now). Lauren has made a fantastic recovery although she still has lasting injuries. Due to the severity of my husbands injuries, he is still in rehabilitation but he is due to come home this year, finally! He works extremely hard to get better and he wants to become as independent as he can, get his life back and be the best dad he can to our daughter. However, the resources are very limited to what is available to him when he comes home and he will need help from the Basic facility in Salford to help him continue to get better (and not go backwards which is a real risk).
Basic are a charity funded centre who provide advice, help with cognition, memory and help with physical problems with their specially adapted gym. For example, they have walking machines and one armed gym machines. These machines are vital for people trying to improve their independence due to reduced mobility and strength (as a result of their injuries) who may be left with a one sided weakness or paralysis (so cannot use everyday gym equipment). Depending on the injury severity, they can also help people get back to work, so they can begin to become financially independent again.
