Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
GDWG is a non-political organisation supporting people held indefinitely in immigration detention at Gatwick. Many asylum seekers are young, vulnerable, away from family, homeland, familiar culture or religion and are caught up in a system they do not understand. Unlike those in prison serving custodial sentences, those held in immigration detention do not know how long they will be held for.
Isolated, many detainees become anxious and depressed. Some have no legal advisor, others have placed money in the hands of firms who do little to represent them, whilst others with good solicitors are baffled by the legal language.
Anxieties about loved ones left behind, the impact of detention and the slowness and incomprehensibility of the system often leave those in detention feeling powerless.
GDWG offers support as best it can, by providing trained volunteers who visit detainees, signposting to legal advice and support, and information on detention and the asylum/immigration system in 19 different languages.
Please help GDWG support those in immigration detention by giving anything you can and in return I'll attempt to limp 26.2 miles round Brighton.
