Story
Last year myself and others managed to raise over £600 for Cancer Research UK participating in the Wolf Run.
This year, I'm running in the Colour Obstacle Rush at Uttoxeter Racecourse to raise money for Genetic Alliance/Rare Diseases UK. Also running with me is Kelly who is raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, which you can donate to here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/KLHdesign
As someone who suffers from a rare genetic disorder myself, I know first hand the difficulties faced by people who are essentially condemned at birth to have to carry their disease with them for the rest of their lives. I'm fortunate that my disease is more of an inconvenience to me than a serious burden (although it has a disturbing tendency to result in organ removal), but that's not the case for a large proportion of people with inherited diseases.
The barriers to being able to more successfully treat and even cure genetic diseases lies within the realms of genome editing and stem cell therapy, as well as other potential future therapies that desperately need awareness and funding in order to become effective treatments. Rare genetic diseases don't have as many charities or fundraising opportunities behind them, so drawing on my personal experience, I'm choosing to focus on providing for one of the few charities directly involved in campaigning for research in rare genetic disorders.
Here are a few examples of diseases that could benefit from helping out:
Hereditary Spherocytosis, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Thalassemia, Haemophilia, Cystic Fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, Fatal Familial Insomnia, Huntington's disease, Klinefelter syndrome, Marfan syndrome, Turner syndrome, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, Phenylketonuria, Williams syndrome
