Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page..
I travelled to Malawi in October 2015 with Kate, my 16 year old daughter to work with the charity Love Support Unite. The charity focuses on running small scale sustainable aid projects at a school they helped establish and at Tilinanu Girls Orphanage which they set up in 2009. Some of the charity's aims include funding the training of local teachers to improve the standard of education in the school. It is not to fund UK teachers to go in and teach the children and then disappear after a month. Other key aims are to educate and train the community in new methods of growing nutritious food to stop the dependency on un-nutritious maize. Working with the local permaculture institute in Malawi, the community is being trained in how to grow salads, vegetables, harvest rainwater, irrigate, make compost, reduce moisture loss & reduce soil erosion. This knowledge will transform food production and supply to the villages. The aim is for each child at the school to receive a nutritious meal once a day. Surplus stock will be sold at market and the income generated will buy new seed and be invested in purchasing resources for the school such as books or fixing the school buildings. The charity also funds Micro loans of £10 to allow the community to create their own businesses. Examples that have already been created include a barbers shop & a bread oven. This is sustainable aid. It allows the recipients to develop and grow without long term dependency on a charity. Should the charity move away the community is left with the skills, knowledge and a source of long term income through their businesses to enable them to continue to grow and develop and survive in a hugely challenging environment.
Kate and I have set a target of raising £10,000 in 12 months. We, along with our amazing friends will be organising a number of events to raise funds for purchasing seeds, fruit trees, rainwater harvesting and training the community in permaculture techniques.
We would love it if you can support us in any way you can.
Thankyou
