Story

Prison systems throughout the world are generally barbaric and counterproductive. Perhaps one day future generations will look back on our time with shock that such otherwise sophisticated people could place so much emphasis on punishment.

I am running for the Prison Phoenix Trust because they do an extraordinary work for the health of our society by supporting prisoners in prisons through yoga and meditation. Thanks to their work every year more British prisons incorporate Yoga in their rehabilitation programmes as a complement to traditional treatment of mental conditions in prison.

Last summer they gave me the opportunity to teach Yoga at HMP Holloway and play a tiny part in their great project, and it's in their honour that I will be running at the 10K London Run 2014.

The Prison Phoenix Trust brings hope and healing to prisoners with the disciplines of yoga and meditation, based on silence and the breath. The Trust trains and supports qualified yoga teachers for work in prisons - in substance misuse, anger management and education programmes. Prisoners are invited to practise daily in their cells and supported by 150 weekly classes in 87 prisons in the UK and Ireland. The PPT encourages them with correspondence, free resource books, CDs, and quarterly newsletters, and also works with prison staff and officers in 20 weekly classes.
