Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In Romania, there are only four working Guide Dogs at present in total, all provided by Light Into Europe. They also have five Guide Dogs in the final training phase, two seizure dogs, four puppies being 'puppy walked', two brood bitches and one stud dog. They are a small local charity (based in Frinton and Bucharest), who do incredible things with tiny amounts of money. Guide Dogs UK need £50,000 for each dog, whereas they are managing to provide each one for £2500 per year inclusive! The training is undertaken by the Light into Europe team and checked by a British Guide Dog consultant with 45 years experience! Light into Europe supplies Guide dogs to the Romanian Blind at no cost, providing even the food and veterinary care, retaining ownership in order that they can continually check on the dogs health and welfare. In Romania, a lot of blind and visually impaired people have no mobility training, so have to stay at home unless someone can take them by the hand and lead them down the street. Even using a long cane, if they have one, would be really hard due to lack of smooth pavements. I cannot imagine not having my independence and not being able to contribute to society just because my eyes don't work properly. There's a lot of education still to be done, as most Romanian people do not yet know about what Guide Dogs are or what they can do. Eloise is going to Romania to help out when she is so busy doing her degree!
