Story
In 2013, I was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia; a rare blood disorder. One of the treatment options was a bone marrow transplant which was the preferred and more successful one. However, I didn't find a match, mainly due to there not being enough Black, Asian and Ethnic minorities signed up as donors – also mainly because of lack of awareness. Thankfully, I had an alternative treatment; others don't. Until I was diagnosed, I didn't know what a bone marrow transplant was, this made me realise that there are many others out there that don’t know that they could be saving someone’s life, by donating their bone marrow.
Statistics show that if you are a white person in need of a bone marrow transplant, you have a 1 in 5 chance of finding multiple donors. However, if you are Black, you have a 1 in 100,000 chance of finding a single donor. For the Asian community, it's a 1 in 250,000 chance of a single donor. There are many Black and Asian people who need help now.
I would like to see an increase in the the number of donors on the register, particularly from the BME community.
