Carney's Community opened in my street a year ago around the time I started to train for my first white collar fight. I went to their open boxing sessions and was impressed and humbled by the way the coaches handled challenging young people, and worked with all comers of whatever (dis)ability, and helped to focus them on moving their lives in a more positive direction.

Many of the coaches have come through extremely difficult times themselves. The more I hear about the kind of starts some of them have had in life, the more I feel I would have made similar choices and ended up in worse trouble! Sport is a fantastic motivator and many of these young people will not have had the opportunity to get involved at school through lack of facilities. Boxing teaches discipline, respect and courage. It provides a safe outlet for the natural aggression we all have.
