About Firefly International:
Firefly works to build bridges through education and the arts. We do this by supporting small-scale community projects worldwide to achieve our shared aims. Our project partners are Svitac in Bosnia, Project Hope in Palestine and Reel Festivals in the UK and Middle East. Firefly International fundraises, recruits international volunteers, and provides administrative support to these transformational projects worldwide that might otherwise lack such resources.
Our partners:
-Svitac is a youth arts NGO in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Svitac delivers community building arts and education workshops, year–round events and summer activity camps to young people of all ethnicities. Founded fifteen years ago by Ellie Maxwell as ‘Firefly Youth Project’ at the end of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Svitac is now a well-established, locally-managed organisation. Like Firefly, Svitac believes that by supporting people to learn together and work on shared interests, a stronger community can be built and perceived boundaries overcome. Svitac strives to bring about reconciliation, develop local knowledge and creativity and strengthen connections to the rest of the world.
-Project Hope is a grassroots youth NGO working in Palestine. It is the largest volunteer organisation of its kind in Palestine bringing together Palestinians and international volunteers to deliver essential community education programs to Palestinian children and young people. Project Hope brings its activities to the communities most in need, working in refugee camps, city centres and villages of the Nablus region of the northern West Bank, teaching English and delivering other essential education, arts and sports programs. Through its volunteers and partners Project Hope also seeks to foster dialogue and raise the issue of Palestine internationally.
-Reel Festivals is an international cultural dialogue project focussed on changing perceptions of areas in conflict launched by Firefly International Director, Dan Gorman in 2007. Reel Festivals believe that art and culture are the best way to break down barriers and increase communication. By delivering specialised festivals which focus on specific areas in conflict and embrace all art and educational forms, Reel Festivals create spaces for voices to be heard, arts to be celebrated and dialogue to evolve. Previous festivals have included poetry, music and film and focused on Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan.
We support these locally-led projects which create safe, supportive, and inclusive spaces for young people to learn, thrive and grow. Through artistic and educational programmes, our partners provide young people with opportunities and support to develop their skills, confidence and networks, improving prospects for brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
Tragically Firefly International’s founder Ellie Maxwell passed away from cancer in April 2009. However, through Firefly the legacy of her compassion, dedication and hard work lives on.
With your help, Firefly can continue to support these important grass-roots projects bring hope to communities with experiences of conflict.
