Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Over 10,000 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year in the UK and the survival rate is around 56%. Other urogical cancers (prostate, kidney & testicular) are among the commonest cancers affecting families in the UK and generally are the least talked about and supported.

These cancers can affect both men and women, accounting for one in three of all cancers in men and one in five for women.

50,000 urological cancers are diagnosed every year in the UK & in any year, across the country they cause 18,000 deaths.

5,000 urological cancers are referred every year to hospitals in the North East of Scotland and in the whole of Scotland there is only one robotic surgery machine available for these patients.

Our efforts are aimed at supporting UCAN- a unique charity supporting patients & their families who have been touched by this cancer.

The UCAN centre is the only centre in the UK dedicated to supporting urinary cancer sufferers & their families.

Check out the fantastic work they do here:  http://www.ucanhelp.org.uk/

The fun bit is we organise a fireworks spectacular- the biggest and best available in the area, every year. The next event will be held on Saturday October 22nd 2016 at New Deer Showground AB42 4XD. Gates open at 4.30, and the fireworks lift off at 8.00 p.m..

Support activities will be on hand in the build up to the event, to include fire eating, fire juggling, stunt performers and live music with food and drink available throughout and more great music, both before & after and with a Son et Lumiere production during the fireworks !

In 2014 and 2015, over 3,000 people attended, so get there early.

This year, the evening is hosted by Buchan Community Radio and we are hoping to have a livecast feed, the link to which will be posted here well in advance.

So far, these people & organisations are helping us put on the spectacular for 2016:

500 people die every year in the North East from Urological Cancers and many more suffer unwanted after effects without appropriate support. These cancers are testicular, prostate, bladder, kidney and penile, they are some of the most curable cancers if detected early enough. UCAN continue to raise funds to highlight awareness of the signs and symptoms of urological cancers and to support sufferers through provision of Scotland's only urological cancer support centre based on Ward 44 at Aberdeen royal Infirmary.
