Story
As many of you will know, last year I completed the Brighton
Marathon and a Brighton to Paris cycle challenge with Jadey – a 23-year-old colleague who has cerebral palsy. Jadey uses a powerchair and is an ambassador for Albion in the Community (AITC), the charity I work for.
Jadey had a dream where he wanted to take part in challenges and raise money to increase our disability provision so that more young people with disabilities could benefit from the same opportunities he has had.
He first became involved with AITC when he was eight. Since then he has become a qualified sports coach, been named apprentice of the year for the whole of Sussex and won the local newspaper’s Community Hero award. He now visits schools, universities and businesses delivering lectures on disability awareness. Basically, Jadey is a bit of a legend!
He wanted to take on another challenge after the marathon and bike ride so we decided to enter the Brighton and Hove Triathlon. This will
be very physically demanding for Jadey – more so than either of our last two events. It will also be particularly hard for me. As well as pushing Jadey during the running section and towing his road chair during the cycle part, I will be pulling him in a specially-adapted dingy during the sea swim.
Because Jadey was taking on such a difficult and demanding new challenge, I wanted to do something extra to help raise funds on his
behalf. I have therefore signed up for an ironman in Bolton later this year. For anyone who doesn’t know, an ironman involves swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and then running a full marathon. Without a rest between stages.
It will, without doubt, be the hardest thing I have ever done – mentally and physically. The training alone is already dominating all my
spare time.
I know many of you will have sponsored me for the marathon
and bike ride last year but if you can spare even a small amount it will be
hugely-appreciated.
Jadey is an absolute inspiration and it was a privilege to help him with the marathon and bike ride. Completing the triathlon will be a huge achievement for us both as well and the ironman is a definite step up from anything I have done before.
Every penny we raise will go towards funding our disability
sport programme and helping more young people like Jadey.
Thank you.
