Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit Gabby's JustGiving page.
Gabby is now 20 and its been nearly three years since her life changing accident in May 2011. A fall from her bicycle on the local nature trail left her with paralysed from the chest down and with fractures to both her wrists.
She spent six months in hospital recovering and adapting to life in a wheelchair. Since coming home she has carried on her rehabilitation, and has been becoming more and more independant as the months have passed, she has tried activities that she thought she would never be able to do again.
When Gabby left hospital the first thing she needed was her own wheelchair, she was lucky enough to receive a grant from Aspire to be able to get the one she wanted.
Gabby now has most of the equipment she needs to lead a relatively normal life. Recently though she has noticed that her legs seem to be stiffening up and harder to put into place and also has a wish to ride a bike again on her local nature trail.
Two family friends, Kristy Allen and John Pearce have decided as their New Years Resolution for 2014, that they would like to help Gabby by doing a series of sponsered events to raise money for Aspire so they can help Gabby get a standing frame and a hand bike.
Rachel Wilkinson and Lee Rawden have already joined in with John and Kristy's fundraising idea, and anyone else is welcome.
UPDATE - 29/01/2014
John and myself have been on BBC Radio Nottingham this morning to highlight Gabby's story and the fundraising. We spoke about a few things that aren't mentioned above.
Gabby has also has Dyspraxia which is a developmental and co-ordination disorder and is a disruption in the way messages are transmitted around the body, essentially it means that certain things that many people can take for granted such as driving, Gabby will take a lot longer to pick up. Gabby has had this all her life and can and has made some aspects of adapting to life in a wheel chair difficult and frustrating.
Another aspect that I didn't mention on the radio either is Cyril.
" Cyril ", as Gabby has named it, is a cyst which is growing within her spine that has filled with Spinal Cord fluid, this has grown upwards from the break point on her spine and may affect her remaining sensations and movement.
Despite this she always remains happy and rarely gets the frustrations of either of her disabilities get to her.
UPDATE - 15/04/2014
Melissa and Adam Case have now joined Gabby's fundraising Team, they will be climbing Snowdon and also doing the three Yorkshire Peaks
