Story
My son Woody, who has autism, attends Ysgol Y Deri (formerly Ashgrove School), which caters for children with a wide range of special learning needs.
On May 7 I will be participating in the 170km CARTEN (Cardiff to Tenby) bicycle ride with the aim of raising funds to help the school purchase specialist sensory equipment.
Specifically, we are hoping to raise enough cash to buy a squeeze machine, a portable set of padded rollers through which the children climb. Think of a massive pasta making machine designed to process small humans!
Many people with autism have difficulty processing everyday sensory information such as sounds, sights and smells. This is usually called having sensory integration difficulties, or sensory sensitivity. It can have a profound effect on a person's life.
The squeeze machine is designed to provide a firm, deep pressure sensation which sends sensory feedback to the brain, helping the kids integrate their bodies with their immediate environment.
Any donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Gareth
