Story
Cancer kills. You are very fortunate if you know of no one
who has been affected by this disease. Yorkshire Cancer Research is a charity
dedicated to eradicating cancer. In April 2017 I am attempting the Marathon des
Sables 2017 to raise funds for YCR.
If you have always wanted to participate in an extreme sport
event but it all seems too much or work has got in the way then the next best
thing is to sponsor someone who is crazy enough to try.
MdS is 6 marathons in 6 days in the North Sahara. Day
temperatures soar to +450C. Participants carry with them all they
need for the week including, clothing, bedding and food. Water is provided daily but it is
rationed. The event is intended to be a
challenge. Entrance is limited to about
1300. The majority are either elite runners from around the world or military
personnel. I will be 63 when I run. I will be joined by my son Matthew. He
was a finalist in the Channel 4 program
“SAS who dares wins” and says he is coming to carry me when things get tough.
Between now and April We will each train over 1500 miles and
will each burn a quarter of a million calories. Training will involve at least
two other marathon events and other minor extreme events such as the Beacons
Ultra 2016 which is a 47 mile run around the Brecon Beacon in freezing
November.
Enough about me. What can you do. I have committed to raise
£20,000. I need your generous help to achieve this target. Please commit
whatever you can. If adding your company badge to my vest will enable a higher
contribution I will be proud to wear it.
