Story
On September 11th I will be running the Great North Run - a half marathon in Newcastle.
I am doing it in memory of my Grandad, who was, and still is
an extremely inspirational person for me. In 2007 Grandad broke his neck, he was left paralysed and was unable to walk again for the rest of his life. Despite this life changing accident he remained determined and never gave up hope that he would walk, doing his exercises even when he wasn’t feeling great. He never grumbled about his situation and always kept his strong and funny personality. Grandad spent over a year in hospital following his accident, but he still managed to make us laugh so much that we cried when we visited him.
Grandad always told me that I can be whatever I want to be and do whatever I want to do, and so I am going to run the half marathon and do it without complaining, because I know he would have done anything to be able to walk again, let alone run.
I am raising money for the charity BASIC (Brain and Spinal Injuries Centre). It helps people with brain and spinal injuries once medical treatment has stopped. Nanna was amazing and was by Grandad’s side the whole time, but not everyone is lucky enough to have such support. BASIC aims to help provide this support alongside ground breaking physical rehabilitation services to improve the quality of life after such injuries. The charity also helps people with depression and dementia. www.basiccharity.org.uk.
