Story
St John Ambulance aims to make the difference between a life lost and a life saved. We work with children and young people of all ages to achieve this, offering them all sorts of opportunities and experiences.
A group of young people from St John Ambulance aged 15-25 have been busy organising a youth exchange to Ghana in August 2012 alongside their studies and volunteering. They’ve been working really hard to work towards achieving their project, including planning the trip in liaison with their Ghanaian counterparts, St John Ghana who are also planning a visit to the UK in 2013.
The latest plan is to do a triathlon with 10 people travelling the distance of the Pra River between them. At 240km, this is the longest river in Ghana and means that we will all be cycling, rowing and swimming 24km each in total.
The activities the young people will be doing in Ghana include volunteering at a day centre for the elderly, training the carers in first aid and more, decorating an orphanage and providing some much needed equipment and learning resources for the children. Lastly they are also planning to learn about the cocoa trade, visiting a cocoa plantation to learn about the cocoa trade and train first aid to the workers there. Historically cocoa has strong links to both Ghana and Bristol as Bristol was one of the first cities to have a chocolate factory in the UK and we were the first to make the chocolate Easter egg.
Our youth members need lots of help and support from businesses, the general public and you, so please dig deep and donate now.
