We help struggling families to get a much needed break

Story

Earlier this year I was given the opportunity to trek to Everest Base Camp in the Nepalese Himalaya in return for raising money to be split between Exodus' Nepal Earthquake Appeal/Community Support Fund and the Family Holiday Association

Events

On 27th October 2016, I will be hosting a private screening of the film Everest at the Curzon Soho.

Ticket revenue will be split between the two charities.

More details to follow.

About the Charities:

Exodus' Nepal Earthquake Appeal / Community Support Fund

After the devastating earthquake of 2015, Exodus set up an emergency appeal to help the people of Nepal rebuild their lives.

After a year of fundraising and rebuilding communities (http://www.exodus.co.uk/nepal-earthquake-news), the appeal has now merged with Exodus' Himalayan Community Support Fund.

This money funds various community projects in the Himalaya, such as:

  • Paying for the building of and resources for schools
  • Providing smokeless stoves for every house in local villages
  • Supporting a sanctuary for retired donkeys (donkeys are used to carry packs along the Himalaya trails)
  • Founding the Women's Eco Cafe in Hankar village
  • Holding courses on safe drinking water and waste management

The Trek:

Tourism is one of the best ways in which to support poor, developing countries such as Nepal. I will be trekking to Everest Base Camp with Exodus in late September/early October 2016. For 12 days we will be trekking through the Himalaya towards Everest Base Camp, including climbing Kala Pattar (5,545m).

Family Holiday Association

The Family Holiday Association is a UK charity dedicated to helping struggling and underprivileged families get away for a short break in order to alleviate household tension.

Holidays or being able to get away for a day-trip to the beach are things that many of us take for granted. But most of the families that the FHA help have never been away before, largely due to mental illnesses including anxiety and depression; domestic abuse; financial issues; physical afflictions; or due to having been a victim of crime, antisocial behaviour or abuse

Research has found that spending time as a family outside the home - particularly when that place is associated with negative events or emotions - can help families bond and destress, helping in an enormous way to defuse potentially explosive situations.
