Story

It only took a visit and an ask to compel us to raise vital funds to keep the North London based Holocaust Survivors' Centre going.

The centre, which receives no government funding, provides a lifeline to its 600 members, offering practical and emotional therapeutic support to those who survived the Nazi Holocaust. Memories of traumatic events from the past can re-emerge as we grow older. The highly qualified specialist workers offer a range of services to address these difficulties, practical assistance to cope with the present and lively social activities to enable members to live life to the full.

The Holocaust Survivors’ Centre is the only centre designed specifically for Holocaust survivors in the UK. Every month, 18 survivors new to us call the centre for support. They are often lonely, isolated and have little or no family to support them. The Holocaust Survivors’ Centre connects them with other survivors who went through similar experiences and brings them into a warm, friendly centre of professional staff and devoted volunteers who help to bring some light into their lives and overcome their isolation.

How your donation can make a difference:

  • £1,000 will cover the cost of 20 counselling sessions for a survivor with the centre’s specialist therapy service. This amazing facility helps so many come to terms with their past and their present.
  • £1,500 funds the centre’s telephone befriending services. This service provides a lifeline to survivors who feel isolated and often are unable to leave their homes. It ensures they are never forgotten with a regular friendly call from volunteers to provide just a welcome chat and support if necessary.
  • £2,500 provides one survivor with a year’s worth of frozen kosher meals. Many survivors are unable to cook and prepare meals or often simply cannot afford kosher food.
  • £5,000 is the quarterly cost of providing Shabbat meals at the centre. Pivotal to the social, religious and cultural life at the centre is the Shabbat dinner at which our survivors can be together with their second and sometimes first family.
  • £7,500 is the six monthly cost of providing transport to and from survivor’s homes to the centre, for outings and organised events, for those - who otherwise could not afford it.
