Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As you know, we are facing the biggest refugee crisis since World War II. As the world is looking on and barriers are being erected every day in Europe to stop the influx of refugees, thousands of people from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries are risking their lives and that of their family members to seek a safe haven. Last year over 350,000 refugees attempted to seek shelter in the heartland of mainland Europe, with at least 3,000 people drowning in the sea trying to enter Greece.
After the countries of conflict, entering into Greece through Lesvos and other islands is probably the most dangerous part of a refugee's journey as they suffer extreme cold in the sea and bereavement due to loss of loved ones. They need to be cared for and supported on their onward journey into northern Europe which then continues from Macedonia.
Last November I went to Macedonia and in January I went to Calais to help the refugees in delivering aid, speak to refugees and offer guidance and support (e.g. travel directions). I have seen the desperate state of the refugees in Macedonia coming from Lesvos and other Greek islands. Now I'm volunteering with a charity and I will be travelling with 5 other people to Lesvos (Greece), God willing, from 16-23 April 2016 to go and help the refugees there. We will all be funding our our own journey there (flights, travel, hotel & food) but require all the financial assistance you can provide to help us help the refugees.
We will be working with local partners in providing refugees with the following vital services among other assistance that we can provide:
1. Purchase essential supplies to immediately assist refugees including socks, bags and rucksacks.
2. Provide charging stations for mobile phones and internet access points.
3) Assist in purchasing travel tickets for vulnerable refugees with no other means.
4) Where possible, help with the burial of the dead and provide support to the bereaved.
5) Assist with the maintenance of refugee graves in the local Christian Cemetery.
6) Provide other assistance required by refugees in cooperation with local volunteers and charities.
Please support us as much as you can so we can give hope to those who are struggling for survival at our doorstep.
Thank you.
