Story

Some of you may know that I have become a rather keen cyclist over the past few years and have been gradually testing myself more, enjoying some cycle touring around and about. It has been a gradual thing and I have been pleased to find with persistence my body has got used to the various challenges I have confronted it with. As someone with a history of a back condition, it has felt wonderful to find something that I can do without causing any lasting damage or pain and to get the free “anti-depressants” that the exercise offers.

I have often heard “Cyclists” when together talking about doing the “Ton” – those 100+ mile bike rides that seem impossible and only the province of lycra-clad, carbon-bike-wielding fitness gurus who have eaten Popeye’s spinach and have calf muscles like small dolphins.... (ok, maybe that is only how I have seen it, but you might know what I mean!). At any rate, the 100 miles in one day has felt like a milestone that might be beyond my own province. But we therapists believe in dreaming big and bold.. and unless we wish to risk hypocrisy, we have to put our money where our mouths are and take some risks too...

So, (aluminium frame, 10 year old bike or otherwise e.g. non thrusting and only demi-clad in lycra!), I think it is time for me to go outside my comfort zone and risk my first One Hundred miles. Typically, I haven’t chosen an easy 100 either. In fact, I am only seeking sponsorship because I am scared of this journey and my ability to do it on my own without any other riders to set the pace and keep me going. It is going to really hurt!!

I have left deciding on doing this until the last minute, because I guess I was scared of committing to it. It was easier to leave it casual, as an “I might give it a go sometime” event, rather than nail my colours to the mast. I know if I seek sponsorship, I will totally be committed and have to do it... so here we go!!

I am fundraising for The Swan Project because I believe what the charity does there in Bristol is unique and deeply precious. Swan is a little gem in a pretty cruel world and I believe it is about offering people hope and love, even when addiction and despair have threatened to take away everything that they have most longed for. Clients can access specialised therapy for as long as they need at a really low cost and no one the project feels they can help will ever be turned away.

If you would be happy to sponsor me, either per mile or for
the day’s cycling, it would really boost me in the challenge I have ahead.
