Story
All of you know of my struggles with my own progressive, hereditary, sensori-neural deafness, and that I am now severely/profoundly deaf.
It is my great privilege to be Patron of AV UK , and it is my heart’s desire to see that children born profoundly deaf today encounter no barriers, and enjoy all the same social and academic opportunities as their hearing peers.
Thanks to AV UK they will be able to listen and speak as well as you. Please help us make that a reality.
Not only am I celebrating my 60th birthday but AVUK is celebrating its 10th birthday and helping over 1,000 deaf children! Help more deaf children to thrive in the classroom, make friends, talk to relatives on the telephone and enjoy music
£25 could help pay for books and toys for therapy sessions
£50 could help pay for a week's support via our helpline to new families
£100 could help pay for an initial appointment for a family with a deaf baby
Auditory Verbal UK is a small national charity which works with deaf children under 5 at centres in London and Oxfordshire. Auditory Verbal therapy sessions are fun, play-based and focus on parent coaching. therapy is given to babies as young as 3 months fitted with excellent hearing technolog in the form of digital hearing aids and cochlear implants 80% of the children who we see graduate with language equivalent to hearing children their age and enter mainstream schools.
£1,500- Pays for a whole term of auditory verbal therapy. A family becomes confident that their child is making good progress and that the language goals we set together are achievable.
£4,500- Helps a family to reach the one year milestone in their programme. At this point, the child is listening and talking. They are developing language so quickly that they start to catch up with other children their own age.
£13,500- Completes the whole journey. Aged four, the child is ready to start mainstream primary school. They have the skills to make friends, chat to relatives on the telephone, thrive in the classroom and even learn to play a musical instrument.
“AV has given our son, born profoundly deaf, the gift of a normal life. He now talks, listens and learns with his hearing friends. He chats on the telephone, enjoys music, and surprises people with the quality of his speech and intonation”
