Story
We worked as volunteer doctors in St Francis' Hospital, Zambia in 2000 to 2001. The hospital serves a huge population over a wide region of the Eastern Provence of Zambia. The work of the hospital is invaluable to the surrounding population, who are mainly extremely poor subsistence farmers. Although supported by the Anglican Church and the Zambian Government the hospital relies upon charitable donations to maintain drug supplies, hospital equipment and to retain local staff. Even the smallest donation helps. The cost to the hospital of providing an outpatient consultation and simple treatment eg for malaria is £2. An inpatient day including food is £3. A blood transfusion, which can be life saving in trauma or malaria is £10. Emergency surgery eg for infection, ectopic pregnancy or a Caesarian Section costs £30. No patient is ever turned away and yet sometimes the hospital cannot provide even these most basic of treatments because of a lack of resource. We know what St Francis' Hospital means to so many people who have no other way of accessing even the most basic of healthcare. See the hospital website www.saintfrancishospital.net for more information.
