We take young people on fun sailing trips to rebuild confidence and independence

Story

As many of you know, Alex (10 at the time) was treated in February 2014 for an osteosarcoma (bone tumour) in his left arm.  He underwent major surgery to remove his humerus and it was replaced with a titanium prosthesis.  Following his treatment we were put in touch with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a national organisation that gives young people between the ages of 8-24 recovering from cancer, the opportunity to take part in a sailing experience to help put their lives back together.  Alex spent 4 days sailing around the Isle of Wight last July (video below) and said it was by far the best thing he'd ever done.  It was the first time he'd met other young people who'd battled with a cancer diagnosis which was immensely comforting and helpful for him. Alex has been asked to return to sail this summer and is looking forward to taking part once again.  In light of this we'd love to give something back to the Trust so have all signed up to do our first open water swim together at Henley - a straightline downstream river Thames swimming event held over the Henley Royal Regatta boomed course on Sunday 10th July.
Alex still trains with Wandsworth Swimming Club and has admirably learned to adapt his stroke due to the limitations of movement that the surgery and prosthesis have left him with.  We're extremely proud of all he's achieved and would like other children to benefit from the wonderful work of the Trust.  So, time to dust off the rubber and take to the Thames!  Thanks for your support. X
