Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our appeal page and reading Grace's story:
A young tabby kitten-cat was reported to our Helpline because she was thin, pregnant and homeless. After an unsuccessful search for her owner she was taken in to care and the vet confirmed she only had about a week to go before she gave birth. She was only a kitten herself of about 7 months old.
Eight days later she gave birth to 6 kittens and, despite being extremely underweight, she coped well for 5 days. Grace (as she had now been named) then became very ill and she had to be rushed to the veterinary hospital where she was put on a drip and given medication. Her temperature peaked at 40.9 degrees and we were all very worried about her. In the meantime her kittens had to be hand-reared as she was too poorly to take care of them. Had she given birth in the finder's garden there is no doubt that the mother and kittens would all have tragically died.
After two days and nights at the vets, having been
diagnosed with mastitis, Grace was discharged with a follow-up visit arranged
for 2 days later. Sadly the initial
antibiotics were not working and the infection became so great that a massive area
of her mammary glands erupted with burst abscesses. Few of the vets had seen such a bad case, as
by now most of the flesh on her tummy had gone and they had to remove vast
amounts of dead tissue.
Throughout all of this Grace has been a model patient, and is adored by all the veterinary team. In typical cat fashion she makes no fuss at all when they flush her wounds on a daily basis and re-dress her tummy. Her only complaint was being denied her breakfast prior to sedation, and so she would put her paw through the bars of her cage and pat everyone who passed so that they didn't forget about her!
Grace is now making good progress and given time we hope she will make a full recovery, but if there was ever a good reason to have a cat neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies surely Grace's plight is it.
Grace's treatment is costing a lot of money and so to raise funds we have launched an Appeal to help pay for her medical care. If we are fortunate enough to raise more funds than required, the money will be used to help other cats in our care.
