Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As High Sheriff of Clwyd I have adopted Blind Veterans UK (formerly St. Dunstan's) as one of my charities. Founded in 1915 to provide support to the men and women of the military who lost their sight during World War 1, the organisation has grown to cope with the casualties from the many conflicts that have followed since then.
The more recent conflicts, particularly Afghanistan and Iraq, has considerably increased the number of personnel needing care and support. This has led to new regional Centres being opened, the latest being at Llandudno.
Llandudno offers rehabilitation, support and training to the veterans, some of whom in addition to being blind also have other disabilities such as trauma and/or loss of limbs. The services provided are tailored to help the veterans cope with their particular disability so that they can again lead independent lives.
Two years ago a Woodland Walk project was opened at the Llandudno centre to provide a sanctuary for residents and visiting veterans. However, there are access difficulties for those blind veterans who are also wheelchair users. Fortunately, these difficulties can be overcome by the use of an adapted golf buggy.
To raise funds for a six seater motorized buggy I will attempt to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in October this year. It will be a twelve-day trip (seven days on the mountain) for which I will pay all of my own travel expenses; every pound you donate will go towards the purchase of the buggy.
The motto of Blind Veterans UK is "Life After Sight Loss" - will you please support me in my endeavour to make this a reality.
Kindest regards
