Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for the ITU at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
On 8th July last year, I gave birth to my third son. It was a difficult labour and when the baby became stressed I was taken for an emergency c-section. Just after he was taken out, my heart stopped abruptly as a result of a very rare Amniotic Fluid Embollism. At the same time, baby Felix wasn't breathing. The staff breathed for him while performing CPR on me for 11 minutes and injecting adrenalin to restart my heart.
Felix recovered quickly. He was then treated for suspected meningitis, but was soon out of neonatal. I woke up 4 days later in intensive care, having been on a life support machine all that time. I was still dependent on oxygen, my lungs were a mess and I was in a lot of pain, but I was alive. I had beaten the odds (30% chance of survival, with an 85% chance of brain damage) and am one of the luckiest mums alive today.
I now want to raise funds for the people in the Intensive Treatment Unit who helped to ensure that I am around to see my three boys grow up. They took care of me when I was at my most vulnerable, helping to feed me, dress me, helped me to start walking again, washed my hair (I'll never forget how much better that made me feel!), and even helped me regain my sense of humour.
I will be forever grateful to those wonderful nurses and doctors without whom I would have left 3 motherless boys and a heartbroken husband.
