We plant macadamia nut tree nurseries to enable sustainable smallholder farming

Story

Hi, my name is Nick,

With friends from my church I will be visiting the Home of Hope orphanage in Malawi this summer for about two weeks. The short-term goal is to help the kids at the HoH have a better summer holiday. However by associating with the Neno Macadamia Trust, we have found a long-term goal of introducing more sustainable living in the communities surrounding the orphanage through a number of small projects. This includes a tree nursery and a fuel-efficient stoves training center.

The aim of the tree nursery that NMT helped fund is to provide the kids with trees that they can plant each year back in their villages, giving their villages sustainable supplies of fuel, timber, fruit, and macadamia nuts in the future. When they leave the orphanage we hope these trees will help set them up for their future lives.

The aim of the fuel-efficient stoves is to provide an opportunity to develop useful skills at the training center. If the center can produce and sell/distribute these stoves to surrounding communities, reducing the pressure on forests in the area. The Home of Hope (HoH) cooks for about 700 people each day with just three stone fires. By using the stoves and improving efficiency of their kitchen, the HoH should be able to demonstrate reduced fuel wood in a environmentally sustainable manner.

50% of the funds raised through Just Giving will go towards my trip and fund the cooking stove project, and the other 50% will go towards the Highland Macadamia Cooperative Union (HIMACUL) who will use the money to fund the tree nursery.

Thank you for your support, your donations will enable us to leave a lasting impact on the Home of Hope and the surrounding community.
