Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Kanzi-Kibera Friends is a charitable trust, which supports four of the many primary schools in Kibera Slum, Nairobi, Kenya. I have a personal association with the charity as my wife is Chair of the Board of Trustees.
These schools are not funded and exist for children whose parents cannot afford the required uniform and equipment for them to attend a government school. Many of the schools' teachers are untrained and the facilities poor and lacking in resources but the energy is high and the resolve to help children have access to education is very strong.
To add to the daily challenges, in August this year, one of our schools caught fire and burned to the ground, fortunately no-one was injured. We believe it was from an electrical fault in the neighbours hut.
Kanzi-Kibera Friends supports the schools in providing a hot meal each day for every child (often their only meal of the day), providing teaching resources and training, and endeavouring to improve facilities through working with local crafts people.
Beyond the primary years, Kanzi tries to offer as many scholarships as possible for children to continue their education at secondary schools. Places are at a premium as there are 40% fewer than at primary schools. The Kibera children are at an extreme disadvantage as secondary education is not free and it is hard to attain the exam results required, given the disadvantages of slum living. But they can and do meet the expectations.
If you can help by donating something, however small, or simply spread the word by posting a link to this page on social media, then together we can change lives and help the Kibera children break the cycle of poverty.
