Story
Wiltshire has many fine old churches. They are important to the local population, not just as places of worship, or for their beauty, but also because they have stood there for many hundreds of years and represent a symbol of continuity and stability in our uncertain times.
Like our homes, churches need regular maintenance to prevent them falling into disrepair. This is very expensive, for example, renewal of the roof of Ss Peter & Paul Great Somerford, which begins this year, will cost £200,000. This work will only be possible through local fund-raising and with the assistance of grants from organisations like Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust.
This year I am taking part in "Ride and Stride" to raise money for this charity. Last year I cycled to 41 churches covering 70 miles in 8 hours and raised over £300. This year I hope to match that total – or if possible, beat it!
