Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page, and thank you to everyone for funding "Paddy's Pond".
Sadly, we lost Paddy very suddenly on Saturday 12th November, 2011.
Paddy was a keen walker and bird watcher, and member of the RSPB and the local Wildlife Trust. He took a particular interest in following the development of land around our home village from working gravel pits to a flourishing refuge for birds and all kinds of wildlife under the management of the RSPB. It seems particularly appropriate to support one of the projects on the reserve team's current wish list in Paddy's memory.
Thanks to everyone's generosity, we will be able to fund the creation of a dragonfly pond in a corner of the reserve that is currently a piece of rough grassland. Fen Drayton reserve is one of the few sites in the UK where the scarce chaser, Libellula fulva, can be found. Over the last summer, Paddy started to get particularly interested in dragonflies, taking note of the seasonal succession of species seen in Fen Drayton Reserve as well as keeping a close watch on the dragonflies and damselfiles emerging from our garden pond.
The next project on the wish list is to prepare an area that is in principle suitable for nesting nightingales in the hope that they can be attracted to breed. This is financially more ambitious, with an estimate of £1375 for the work. Also on their wish-list are cycle racks for visitors who come by bike. Paddy would surely approve.
Thank you so much to everyone for your generosity. At this stage, I think it is time to consult the local warden again for further instructions. Watch this space!
