We support disadvantaged young people to reduce offending & improve opportunities

Story

Hello Everyone,

I have decided to run my first half marathon in October (super soon and last minute) and I am running it for Carney's Community. I wanted to support Carney's because I feel personally connected to it. I have been really passionate about boxing for a good number of years and stumbled across Carney's earlier this year, looking for somewhere to box locally. I was immediately welcomed by everyone there and have been regularly going ever since, but it was only as I became more involved that I realised the incredible extent of all the amazing things they are actually doing. What is so special is that you can visually watch the impact and the important role that all the activities, but particularly the boxing has on these amazing people. I felt so inspired that I have begun volunteering for them, but wanted to support them more so I felt the best way I could start was to run for them! So please do have a read below and I hope you join me in supporting this incredible organisation which is actively making a difference to so many young people’s lives.

''Carney’s Community aims to reduce offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. We achieve this by engaging a range of young people, in positive and constructive activities. These young people are from a variety of backgrounds, with a focus on the disadvantaged and excluded. We believe that by empowering young people through mentoring, participation, focusing on their strengths and learning from each other, we can improve not only their opportunities, but also those of their local communities.

Carney’s Community is inspired by Mick Carney, the boxing legend who motivated and turned around many lives through engagement with boxing. Mick introduced youth worker George Turner to boxing coach Mark Reigate who founded Carney’s Community in 2011.
We achieve results through:

sustained, intensive one-to one mentoring whenever it is needed, for as long as it is needed;
teaching employable skills, discipline, self respect and a sense of purpose by focusing on education, employment and personal development, alongside group activities such as sport and the arts;
creating a supportive community environment, something often missing from a young person’s life; and
creating a ‘virtuous cycle’ - once our mentees are employable and employed, we encourage them to give back by taking on the role of mentor or coach.
Our services are targeted at disadvantaged young people aged 11 to 30 who come from deprived backgrounds in Wandsworth, Lambeth and the surrounding areas.”
