Story
I am 27, well 28 in March.
I was born with the inherited genetic condition Cystic
Fibrosis.
Cystic Fibrosis is a condition that mainly affects the lungs
and digestive system.
This means that from the age of 10 I have been on and off
intravenous antibiotics.
I managed to complete university but with increasing amount
of iv antibiotics but after then my health went down hill, then the idea of
transplant was mentioned but I put it off for as long as I could, but when my health went down hill even more and one year I spent 24 weeks in hospital. By then not only was I on oxygen 24 hours a day and then was on a none invasive ventilator for most of the day and all night to keep my airways open.
So I decided to then go on the active list but with more
tests needed for my stomach and digestive system I didn't go live on the list till July.
On the 9th of September 2013 I got the call from Harefield
to say that they hade some lungs available that could be a possible match.
I got my transplant on the first call after only being on
the list for just over 7 weeks.
So on the morning of the 10th of September I had the
operation and got new lungs thanks to the kindness of my donor and their family.
After the operation by that evening I was off the ventilator
and breathing for my self with my new lungs and by the next day the nurses and
physio's had me on an exercise bike. And after just 2 weeks I was able to walk into Harefield village.
I was discharged to go home 16 days after my transplant
which felt weird as sometimes I had spent longer in hospital for intravenous antibiotics and still didn't feel that great.
Me and a group of 5 others who all have had transplants at
Harefield hospital either a heart or lungs are raising money for the Harefield Transplant Club which helps recipients and their families after their transplants into the future.
We are all competing in a 10 mile Tough Mudder obstacle course
In honour of our donors and to raise money for our Transplant Club and to show how transplantation can change lives.
