Story
Kagando Rural Development Centre is a health and education project managed by the Church of Uganda, based around Kagando Hospital. It was here that I worked 1992-94. I saw huge needs for basic health care that we take for granted in this country. It was a steep learning curve and I was supported by some wonderful Ugandan colleagues, some of whom I am still in touch with and continue to work at the hospital.
Approaching the big 50 I have been in denial that it is really happening to me, worried that I am suddenly "becoming old". But then I was challenged to look at it differently and celebrate one of life's great landmarks, at the same time trying to make a small difference for those much less likely to reach 50 in Uganda. This year Kagando Hospital celebrates its 50th birthday so instead of giving me a present please bless the patients of Kagando with a donation to "Friends of Kagando".
This is a UK based charitable trust managed by a board of Trustees who are past long-term workers at Kagando or regular visitors. As well as raising funds, it sends equipment and arranges visits from colleagues with particular expertise. It has a supporting role but Kagando is run by Ugandans and always the focus has been to encourage independence rather than dependence on Western Aid. See their website for more details at
http://www.friendsofkagando.org.ukYou can see a few photos of a younger Jane in the gallery below...yes it really is me. I wonder whether it was me sometimes, it seems such a different world to the one I am in now. But I don't want to ever forget my Kagando experiences lest I become too comfortable here in the West where we have so much in the material sense.
