Janet worked for many years as an audio describer, receiving an MBE in 2011 in part for her services to the visually impaired. She was the founder member of the Audio Description service for visually-impaired theatre-goers at the Manor Theatre, Sidmouth. She was leader of the EDDC award-winning volunteers' team there for 10 years. She also audio-described for the Northcott Theatre in Exeter.
