Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
2010 started well with the usual mayhem which you expect to have with three young boys, Sam (3), Adam (4) and Connor (6). But just two weeks into the new year, my wife and I were puzzled to find numerous bruises all over Adam. After phoning NHS Direct we were advised to go to Glan Clwyd Hospital. After seeing a consultant in the childrens ward, the word which is now part of our lives was said, Leukaemia. After a blood test confirmed Adam had cancer of the blood, our lives had been affected by 'something that happens to someone else'. The weeks that followed were tough for everyone, especially Adam and it will be for the next 3 years of treatment.
Just before Easter, Rhian our Clic Sargent nurse asked 'what were we doing over Easter?'. It was at this point that Nicola's Fund was brought to our attention.
Nicola fought a courageous three year battle with a malignant brain tumour, before she lost that fight and died 5 days before her 15th birthday on April 20th 2005. During her lengthy, protracted treatment, Nicola faced the trials of chemotherapy and radiotherapy with great bravery. Although she was often in pain she managed to sustain her family and friends with her high spirits and her laughter. Despite her illness Nicola was able to have a special holiday in Florida and to realise her lifetime ambition of swimming with dolphins. Whilst on this trip her thoughts were for the children who weren’t able to travel great distances and enjoy the sights she had seen. She also spent a wonderful week at Center Parcs where she enjoyed all the activities including riding a bike, riding a horse, crazy golf and swimming. With this in mind, her family and friends have decided to set up a fund, which will enable children who are suffering with cancer to have a special time and to aid their progress during this difficult period.
So after being in the Nicola's Fund caravan in Porthmadog for a week, we came home the happiest we'd been in months. It was great to see Adam grow in confidence with each days play. So we can use the caravan whenever its available and also have a week at Center Parks to look forward to, all thanks to Nicola's Fund.
So from Friday 6th till Monday 9th August, with the company of some friends, we are going to cycle from Cardiff to Holyhead which is 240 miles!!!
Nicola's love and concern for all other children will be continued...
