Story
On 27th and 28th August 2016 I will be taking part in Ride the North, a two day, 175 mile cycle challenge through the Grampian Highlands in the North of Scotland. The route begins and ends in the Aberdeenshire village of Rhynie - riding up to Inverness via Glenlivet and Tomintoul and returning to Rhynie via Forres and Elgin.
I have chosen to cycle for The Sandpiper Trust after the loss of my Granda. On 5th November 2014, my Granda lost his life after being struck by a car on a pedestrian crossing in Inverbervie. Due to the accident happening in a rural area, the closest Ambulance is 9 miles north in Stonehaven. Unfortunately that day, no local Ambulances were available and the closest one to get to the scene came from Banchory (this took over 1 hour).
Due to the fantastic work of The Sandpiper Trust, a trained Sandpiper First Responder was able to get to the scene within minutes with a fully equipped first response bag and stabilise my Granda. Although my Granda did not make it, I truly believe he was made comfortable and able to survive until he got to ARI thanks to the work of all the doctors on scene and the availability of equipment thanks to the Sandpiper bag.
To supply a fully equipped Sandpiper Bag and train a Sandpiper first responder costs £4,000. I would love to give this back to the charity.
