Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I'll be walking from the Scilly Isles to the northernmost point on Shetland to raise awareness for Women in Need. But why this Charity?
Whilst working on another project 'Weardale Women' I came across a lady who was originally from Weardale but now lives in Nagpur. Here she works to provide support and care for women who have become ostracised by society either because of leprosy, a disease that the Indian Government claims has been eradicated, or by a vicious circle of mental health, physical and economic issues, themselves often a product of contracting leprosy. As any of you who know me know, I know something about strong women and I immediately felt a sense of admiration and pride in the person (Leah) and the work she does. I wanted to be involved and suggested I come out to Nagpur and take a series of photographs over a period of a month. These, we hoped, might be used for publicity and raising awareness of the problems that the Charity faces but also celebrating the value and worth of its work and thus the sponsoring and furthering of its aims. Unfortunately, for reasons that they were unable to share with me, the Indian Authorities saw fit not to grant me a visa and so I am tying this sponsorship in with my latest project. After all, I promised to help and this seems one way of making some limited impact. When you see the commitment of the Charity workers and the needs of the 'lucky' women who have found help they are impossible to ignore.
