Story
Since the case of Troy Davis, I feel my eyes have been opened wide to the multiple injustices that take place on America's death row. I feel that the death penalty is one of the ultimate betrayals of democracy and I feel disgusted that men believe it is their duty to decide who lives and dies.
The mistreatment that takes place in Guantanamo Bay cannot be justified in any way, and the authorities clearly know that, otherwise they would not be so desparate to cover up their actions. The fact that so many prisoners who have not been tried (and many who have already been cleared for release) are treated like no country should even treat its most dangerous criminals is a moral outrage.
Reprieve is a widely overlooked charity that works to restore the justice to the justice system, saving lives in the process. The work they do protects us all, because if we do not fight all injustice, it will be strengthened and will eventually turn on us.
I believe that true social progress is measured by selecting the group which is most mistreated, and in today's world it often happens to be the prisons - in particular some of the secret prisons that Reprieve lawyers strive to operate in.
Because of this, I will eat an evening meal on Thursday 18th September and then not eat again until I have breakfast on Monday 22nd September. According to NHS Direct, this "isn't going to be great sustinence-wise," but that's kind of the point. I know that whatever I may experience will be nothing compared to the torture faced by some of Reprieve's hunger-striking clients.
I have specifically chosen the dates to coincide with the third anniversary of Troy Davis' death.
