Story
Mission Rabies is a charity volunteer organisation that is working towards eliminating rabies by 2030. I am fortunate enough to be part of the team heading to Sri Lanka in September this year to help vaccinate dogs and educate the community to put a stop to the unnecessary suffering of people and animals.
Did you know that…
- Rabies is 100% preventable through education and vaccination
- 100 children die from rabies EVERY DAY across the world
- Over 99% of cases of human rabies are caused by an infected dog bite
Mission Rabies was launched in September 2013, powered by vets and
volunteers from 14 countries. Since then Mission Rabies has educated almost 400,000 children in over 1300 schools in the most Rabies prevalent countries across the globe. Education and awareness is integral to mass vaccination projects. By educating the local communities about dog behavior, the life-saving steps to avoid rabies infection if bitten by a dog & protection of dogs by vaccination, Mission Rabies is working towards preventing needless deaths from this devastating disease.
Mission Rabies have sterilised over 49,000 dogs and vaccinated over 305,000 dogs. This is truly a mammoth effort given this is a charity organisation based on volunteers!
Why vaccinate dogs instead of humans?
Vaccinating dogs against rabies has been shown to stop the spread of the disease to people and saves the lives of humans and dogs. The World Health Organisation states that mass canine vaccination programs are the most effective measure for controlling rabies. Protecting dogs is the quickest and fastest way to protect people and tackles the disease at the source. The cost of vaccinating dogs is also significantly cheaper than the cost of vaccinating people too, so there is an economic benefit to preventing the disease in dogs as a primary initiative.
