Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Even giving a little gives a lot, together.
I'm not doing anything amazing (by running a half marathon) but St George's Renal department is - every day. They treat over 430 patients from South London, Surrey and Sussex in a very small unit which needs funds to improve it's facilities. Having been there and sat watching and waiting with my lovely friend I have witnessed the cramped conditions, the number of patients they see and the incredible warmth and dedication of the team.
Kidney transplants save lives but still there are not enough kidney donors to match waiting patients - just over 50% of people waiting manage to get a match each year (approx 2900/5248). The lucky few, in our area, whose lives have literally been transformed due to a kidney transplant then continue to visit the St George's renal department regularly throughout their lives to be monitored by the team there. It isn't a 'wash and go' scenario!
Did you know that they don't swap a diseased kidney with a new one but add it to the body in the abdomen? Kidneys are the most transplanted organ. One patient I met had 4 kidneys in her body!
It's easy to support the big charities but it's often the small ones that need our help more.
