I have chosen to run for the Avenues group as it is a charity that supports my brother - John, who has learning disabilities. In particular 'Community Futures' which is a branch of the 'Avenues group'.

Community Futures' approach is centred on the involvement of the individual in order to identify issues that effect them in the community and then help them to take the steps to be heard. John feels very much part of a team rather than someone who just receives a service.

As a result of their work, people with learning disabilities – and the people around them - discover and understand how they want to live and what support they need to develop or retain their independence.

The idea for Community Futures took shape as a response to the Community For All Challenge, a project in Sevenoaks, Kent. At the centre of the project was the principle that people with learning disabilities can access and enjoy mainstream services like everyone else, with some of the support to do so coming from the community itself - not just social care services.

The Avenues group also gives support to people living with; Complex needs & behaviour, Acquired brain injuries, Autism & Dementia.
