Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Thank you so much for the donations everyone. A group from Team Kenya are in Ndhiwa as we speak and as a DIRECT RESULT of your fundraising I have been able to request they organise new desks for Nyarandi School. The fundraising goes on to help provide other vital equipment and teaching aids for the school and hopefully concrete some more floors to help prevent the students getting 'Jiggers'. If this is your first visit to my page, please take the time to read the stories and look at the pictures. Thank-you once again to allwho have already helped us to help the people of Ndhiwa.
My visit to Ndhiwa in Kenya was a complete eye-opener and has inspired me to ensure that I continue to support this fabulous charity.
Team Kenya is different to any other charity I know in that EVERY SINGLE PENNY you donate, goes directly to individual people - you can even name them if you want to personally donate to one of the people I will tell you about! Donations of £1 WILL make a difference!
Donate £1 - Girls who have reached puberty often do not go to school when they are menstruating. This is because they have no sanitary protection and are embarassed. Girls sometimes have sex with men to pay for sanitary towels. Team Kenya provide free washable sanitary protection to girls. These are called 'Padi Bora'. The girls are able to attend school and are protected from engaging in 'survival sex' thus avoiding disease and early pregnancy. A pack if five padi bora will last a girl a year and costs just £1
Donate £5 - Nyarandi Primary School: I am working with this school to improve the life chances for all it's pupils. The school is very remote and has a very high number of children who are orphans, living in poverty, or suffering from illness or disease. Initially, I would like to purchase more desks for the classrooms; this would allow children to sit two per desk rather than squash three or four to a desk with little room to write. (see photo) Each desk costs £5. Ultimately I would like to concrete the floors of each classroom to help prevent the children getting 'jiggers'. These are fleas which live in dust and pierce the feet of children who do not have shoes. They then feed on their host's blood in order to reproduce. This causes intense pain and secondary infection resulting in loss of nails or even toes. (see photo)
Donate £10- Beril Odiald: Is 15 years old and is the brightest pupil in Nyarandi Primary School. She lives with her mum (Grace), gran (Sibia) and her younger brothers and sisters in a mud hut which is in dis-repair since her father died. They eat whatever Grace grows. Grace makes charcoal to sell for necessary purchases such as clothes. At the end of this month, Beril will take her exams and leave primary school but will be unable to start secondary school because Grace cannot afford the fees. £20 a month would enable Beril to continue her education to get a good job and help lift her family out of the poverty trap they are currently in. Any amount helps - Team Kenya has many requests for help which it tries to fulfil on a daily basis. Whilst I was there a mum brought her son Eric to us. Eric had been bitten by a rabid dog three weeks previously. He needed to travel to a hospital to be given injections to prevent his death. He needs six. After the first injection he became really ill so mum paid again for him to travel back to the hospital. There it was discovered that Eric was also suffering from Malaria and Tuberculosis. He needs additional treatment for these diseases. Mum has already sold her goat to pay for the treatment for rabies and has nothing else to sell to pay for his treatment. She came to Team Kenya asking for help to save her son's life. Team Kenya are now helping to pay for his treatment so that mum can continue to feed her family.
In June, whilst out gathering wood for the fire Callette, aged 12, was dragged into the woods and raped by a man holding a machete to her throat. She ran immediately to Caroline Onyango, the girls support worker from Team Kenya. Caroline took her to the hospital, then to the police station and a 22 year old man was arrested. Team Kenya paid for her treatment and supported her through the trial in July. The man was jailed for fifteen years. Whilst I was in Ndhiwa, we took Calette and a group of girls who had had similar traumas, on a day trip to Lake Victoria where they had a lovely meal and were able to play in the grounds of a hotel. This trip was funded by Team Kenya.
Team Kenya does not employ any people from the UK - all our work is voluntary. The people who are employed (such as Caroline) are people from the village of Ndhiwa who are gaining qualifications and skills which they are sharing with their community. This is truly a charity which helps people help themselves. Please donate any amount you can spare to help us continue this vital work.
