I'm climbing the 4,167m of Mt Toubkal, North Africa's highest mountain. A tough challenge requiring 7 hours plus trekking over 3 days at altitude to raise money for FOJO and help people going through chemotherapy. Nothing can quite prepare you for the fear of your first chemotherapy treatment. Nothing about it feels right. For me, I was 36 and had been diagnosed with 3 grade, 3, stage 3 large triple negative breast tumors that had already spread to my lymph nodes. Surgery was impossible, chemotherapy was my only hope, but that still didn't make it feel right. You sit and feel the cold go up your arm and flood across your brain. You hope that it will hunt down and obliterate the cancer. Then comes the day you brush your hair and out it comes, everywhere, and it hurts so much. You feel low, weak, tired, scared. And then you do it again because it's your only hope. And you do it over and over 6 times as your body grows increasingly tired. You look in the mirror and it almost becomes impossible to recognize the person staring back. Each time you hope you're doing the right thing, but that doesn't make any of it feel right. Thankfully, the chemo blasted my cancer, enough to let it be removed safely within my breast along with all lymph nodes, and it's stayed away for nearly 4 years now, which although isn't out the risk zone, for triple negative is really good going. But I'll never forget those scary times. Together with my chemo nurse Kerry Burnett (founder of FOJO) we hatched a plan to try and make things easier for patients at this most difficult of times. In the last 3 years we have provided vein finder machines, furnished a quiet room, set-up teleconferencing, bought drugs fridges, introduced brilliant new patient packs, treat vouchers and a PICC line service. We are about to launch a project to benefit survivors after treatment. Not bad for a small volunteer lead charity. But patient numbers continue to rise and whilst we can't make things feel right, we can help to smooth this most turbulent of rides. Please sponsor me and help me to make a tough time easier for those having to undergo chemotherapy. Thank you :) x
