What is aphasia?
Aphasia is 'a complex disorder of language and communication resulting from damage to the language centres of the brain' (Stroke association, 2016).
People with aphasia can have difficulties in:
- overall communication
- understanding what is said to them
- getting their message across
- reading and writing
It has a huge impact on the lives of so many people, their carers and families often meaning people may have to leave work. As a consequence, lack of confidence and social isolation are big risk factors for people with aphasia.
NETA (The North East Trust for Aphasia is a charity which aims to support people and their families in the North East who have aphasia.
They have a support centre based at Newcastle University, which is housed within Speech and Language Sciences. It employs an SLT and SLT assistant who provide various forms of support including:
- Regular weekly conversation groups, art groups and floral craft groups
- Regular 'Relative's group' for support and discussion.
- Liaison with local speech and language therapy services and drop in days for new members, relatives and professionals.
As someone who had very little awareness of aphasia before starting the Msc Language Pathology course, I have come to learn how much it can impact upon individuals across every aspect of their lives. As I begin my second year, and first placement with adults with aphasia, many of whom will be benefitting hugely from the support given by NETA, would like to raise as much money as possible for such a worthy cause. Please check out the website below for more information and give whatever you can to help this brilliant charity continue with its aims to raise the profile of aphasia and continue to support individuals, their friends and families.
THANK YOU!!!
