I'm travelling to Bangladesh in April with some medical students and doctors to volunteer in eye camps set up by the charity Selfless (www.selfless.org.uk). We will be working with local surgeons  providing care and screening 500 to 1000 patients' eyes, and the camps will be set up to provide cataract operations and treatment for people who may never see another doctor or medical student.

For the project, I'm required to raise £1200 (none of which goes towards my own flights etc, but 100% towards funding the project itself). Your money will go towards funding the cataract surgery, prescription glasses and various eye drops to help alleviate the misery suffered by one of the world’s poorest. We will be filming during our time there and you will be able to see the impact you donation has made.

"Following successful Elective Aid trips Selfless are now focusing on improving peoples’ lives by restoring their vision. We have found the poor to be at risk of blindness and cast out of society due to visual impairment. This leads to an inability to financially support themselves or their families. We are currently focusing our Eye Camps in Sylhet where Sightsavers report that over 59,000 are blind and 75% are blinded due to cataracts. It is estimated that 9,000 new cases of cataract blindness occur every year. 350,000 adults and 130,000 children are reported to suffer from visual impairment that could be corrected by glasses. Each Eye Camp works with local doctors to screen in the region of 500-1000 villagers, provide restorative cataract surgery to 30-40 of the poorest and provide glasses to others. The Eye Camp trip lasts for 5 days; volunteers will be working with local doctors to screen and take histories from patients attending camps."
