Story
Amarna, the ancient Egyptian city built by King Akhenaten, is under increasing threat by illegal encroachment. Unless steps are taken to halt this, little of this unique site will remain for researchers and visitors in the future.
One of several areas under immediate threat is Kom el Nana, the location of one of Amarna's most important ritual complexes: a sun temple for queen Nefertiti. In late Roman times it was the setting for a mudbrick monastery, including a church with painted wall reliefs.
Partly excavated in the 1980s and 90s, large areas of the site remain undocumented. Yet in recent years, illegal extensions to surrounding agricultural land have reached the outskirts of Kom el-Nana, breaking through the enclosure wall and threatening the archaeological remains. Urgent intervention is needed.
Can you help?
The Amarna Project asks for your support to help us build a barrier around Kom el-Nana in conjunction with the Ministry of State for Antiquities of Egypt. Your donation will be put towards building materials and labour costs; you will be helping to protect a site of world significance.
No donation is too small - every little bit makes a difference. Thank you for your interest in our work.
