Story
This is the latest two-wheeled adventure embarked upon by a group of colleagues from Aviva’s Motor Claims Centre of Excellence in Stretford
What started out with humble origins in 2009; the annual Manchester to Blackpool ride, 55 miles, completed in one day, has mushroomed to ever more challenging and longer routes. 2010 was Coast to Coast, 210 miles over 3 days to last years, Tower to Tower; Eiffel Tower to Blackpool Tower to be exact; 480 miles in 5 days
Each year has seen a doubling of the miles covered and days in the saddle. This year is no different; Land’s End to John O’Groats is 920 miles. It will take 12 days to complete, meaning the average daily distance is 80 miles
The driving force behind these trips is the raising of money for people who are less fortunate than most. From a few hundred pounds garnered on the first cycle ride, £3300 was collected for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital on the Coast to Coast trip on the Transpennine trail - 217mile through to £4600, last year, obtained after the Tower to Tower ride
This year’s choice of charity is Railway Children, which works with children living on UK streets. The target is to hit 5 figures for the first time and achieve £10,000 plus
6 people are facing up to the 930 plus miles. 3 are ever present over the years (Tony Ensor, Chris Brown, Chris Chaplin); the other 3 are newbies (John Brahms, Simon Hendley, Jan Birkenshaw). The last time the 3 newbies ever got their leg over a bike, Margaret Thatcher had just become Prime Minister!!
Starting off in Land’s End, the planned journey takes the guys through Taunton, Bristol, Hereford, Warrington, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Perth and Inverness
The ride starts on the 28th June and ends on the 9 July.
